Redirect to WordPress

For new posts, please visit "Random thoughts" on WordPress. I've exported the blog posts and comments from here to there.

The only interesting things that remain here are in the sidebar, such as the Weather Picture of the Day, various links, and the "current books" widget, which I have not yet managed to copy to WordPress without distorting the page layout.

So it's not perfect, but at least I have more confidence that some algorithm won't delete my blog without warning, as happened to ERV’s blog.

Migrating from Blogger to WordPress: posts imported

I've imported all the Blogger posts from "Random Thoughts" over to my personal blog on WordPress, "If Not Now, When?". There's still quite a bit of editing to do: the tags come over as categories and all intra-blog links need to be changed to their equivalent WordPress links. The biggest job, though, is re-saving all the images to WordPress, deleting them out of the articles, then re-importing them. However, I've started in a small way.

From now on, expect new articles to be on "Random Thoughts: If Not Now, When?"

Migrating from Blogger to WordPress: preparation

I'm slowly going through my old blg posts, finding the links that are expessed in the blog post titles. Then I edit the post and move the link into the body of the article. I've done 2007, most of 2006, and the older posts up to somewhere in 2005. I have less than a year to do. Then I'll check them all again. I'm eager to export them to Wordpress without losing the links.

Migrating from Blogger to WordPress

The disappearance of ERV’s blog got me thinking about moving my old personal blog away from Blogger. You can quickly suck your site over to WordPress, but it’s good to do some preparation first. You can create a WordPress account in seconds. The only hitch I found is that when I imported, all external links in article titles were replaced by permalinks for the articles.

So go to the Blogger version of your blog and check the old posts. Wherever there’s an external link in an article title, make sure that the same link is somewhere in the body of the text. If it’s there, fine; otherwise edit the article and create the link. Go through all your old posts.

You probably should look at your blogger article tags, too. You must edit articles individually in WordPress to change their tags or categories. However, you can convert tags into categories. So if you tag the articles (which you can do en masse in Blogger) with your proposed category names, when the articles are in WordPress you can convert the tags to categories and skip that editing chore. You’ll end up deleting some categories and re-applying them as tags, but that’s better than having everything “Uncategorized.”

Then go back to WordPress, find the Import command, and specify your blogger URL & password. Your articles will be imported. The pictures are still hosted at Blogger. Your cross-links between articles are still pointing to the blogger articles, too.

moar funny pictures

Next, go through all the old articles in your new WordPress version and re-save the pics one by one to your computer (if you don’t already have them in a blog images directory). As you save each one, re-upload it to WordPress and replace the blogger-hosted pic with the wordpress-hosted one. Here’s how: Edit post, delete the blogger pic. Click “Add Media” (first little box that looks like a TV screen), the “Choose Files to upload” button, select file, Open. [WordPress is crunching your file.] You get three choices of sizes: thumbnail, medium, and full size. (It’s probably easiest to go for medium and re-size it with the cursor. Holding down SHIFT sometimes makes it keep the proper proportions.) Click on Insert…

That should work. If your dialog box goes blank, you’ve lost this round. Try again later. Usually the image is uploaded but it might not be inserted. Instead of clicking “Files to Upload” click on “Media”, select the image (latest is at the top), click on Show, and then on the command to Insert. Don’t bother to select Left or Right here, that just hard-codes the alignment. Do it after your image is in the article.

If it fails, I often have two instances of the WordPress open. Close any extras. Re-start browser if that doesn’t work.

Move the newly imported pic to where you want it (drag in Visual tab or cut and paste in HTML tab). Click on the inserted image and select left or right to tuck it into the text or centered to give it its own vertical space. You can edit the HTML view add margin to keep the text from touching the image. I can supply the codes for decent left and right margins (two separate sets).

Finally, fix intra-blog links so they point at WordPress.

I have 1900 articles in Science Notes and my old pictures are still mostly on Blogger. I’m currently going through all my 900 personal blog entries to make sure the external links are in the articles. Then I’m going to suck it over into my personal WordPress blog.

Apparently you can use a 303 Redirect to keep your old blog’s market share or rating.

In WordPress, you publish once; after that you just save and the article stays published. You can also give articles a future date and time and publish them. They will appear at the specified hour.

WordPress April round-up

WordPress has published some statistics for April:

  • 240,494 blogs were created.
  • 281,729 new users joined.
  • 2,533,704 file uploads. (Y’all use the new uploader a lot more.)
  • About 740 gigabytes of new files. (Estimated, better number next month.)
  • 317 terabytes of content transferred from our datacenters. (Compare to last time we published transfer numbers.)
  • 3,258,032 posts and 1,330,355 new pages.
  • 4,903,485 logins.
  • 655,178,604 pageviews on WordPress.com, and another 408,359,440 on self-hosted blogs. (1,063,538,044 pageviews total across blogs using our stats system. We broke a billion!!)
  • 63,730,680 pageviews in RSS feeds.
  • 884,208 active blogs, where “active” means they got a human visitor.
  • 152,005,525 unique people visited WordPress.com-hosted blogs.

Random facts:

  • About 30% of pageviews go to blogs with their own domains.
  • 43% of pageviews to permalink pages.
  • 30% of pageviews go to blogs in languages other than English. The most popular? Spanish, Portuguese, and Indonesian.
  • 63% of our visitors were from outside of the United States.
  • About 93% of pageviews were to people not logged in.
  • People logged in somewhere using OpenID 84 thousand times.
  • Blogs using the Digg3 theme got 5.26% of total traffic.
  • There were 475 posts made via the Atom API (234,831 with XML-RPC).
  • We sent 3,761,059 emails.

So many of our stats fall along 70/30 lines it’s scary.

Why did Blogger delete ERV's blog?

Many science bloggers are asking why Blogger.com deleted a science blog, ERV (endogenous retrovirus). The blogger, Abbie Smith, is a graduate student in HIV research. She has shown herself quite capable of debating pesudoscience floggers such as Michael Behe, pointing out their mistakes and lies, demanding proof of their claims, and tapping her foot while they come up empty. For this Behe calls her "some woman" (not HIV researcher, not grad student, not young scientist) who's a Mean Girl.

And then a couple of days ago her blog suddenly disappeared from Blogger. It isn't full of links. It's not spam. So what happened? Did some creationists complain about her? Did Blogger yank the plug without investigating? Inquiring minds want to know, but there doesn't seem to be any place to ask that question.

ERV is back on blogger for now with no explanation offered as to the breach of service. ERV is pulling up stakes and transferring her articles to Scienceblogs.com, where there's a committment to actually supporting science bloggers. Scienceblogs hosts the most popular science blog in the world, Pharyngula, and I expect the site to attract much more traffic for ERV.

Blogger's treatment of ERV has made me think that I'd better accelerate the transfer of my blog to WordPress, especially since Blogger's kludgy published procedure for backing up a blog backs up only the last 500 posts.

Is transit an essential service?

The sudden transit strike in Toronto on Saturday was quickly over but it may have been a serious tactical mistake for the union. They had must about everything they wanted. But now the Ontario government is preparing emergency legislation to declare public transit an essential service and take away their right to strike. The public certainly doesn't like their daily lives to be held hostage. If people depend on transit and forgo buying cars, then their lives will be thrown into confusion, their jobs and childcare arrangements and appointments will suffer if they can't use public transportation.

The union says that they don't want to be declared essential. Once it's illegal for them to strike they won't be able to apply the same pressure that they do now. But I think they almost deserve it.

Home from BC

I'm safely home from Revelstoke, where we successfully married off the blushing bride. This is my cousin's daughter (thus a cousin once removed) and her new husband, after their (non-religious) marriage service.

Surprise transit strike in Toronto

After the transit union and the city reached a tentative deal after the last minute, we thought we had a chance of avoiding a strike altogether. And there was supposed to be 24 hours' notice. But the union rejected the deal, the union leader muttered something about threats from the public, and the transit went on strike immediately on Saturday, stranding thousands of people. Sigh. Every time they have a strike, some people stop using transit and never come back.

I didn't take this picture, but I saw scenes like this with the dramatic rainy-day clouds. This is Eagle Pass.

Kittens are hunters

Someone (I suspect one of our feisty boy kittens) brought in a starling last night. They ate the head and left the rest of it in the dining room. (I guess that's appropriate!)

Flying out...

It's one of those crazy weeks. I've finished my rush HTML project, slept in instead of going swimming today, and tomorrow I'm flying to Kelowna, B.C. and driving to Revelstoke for a cousin's wedding.

Cat back again

Marlowe on her caveMarlowe didn't show up last night but she was here this morning, sleeping on the couch.

Unfortunately, she's been under a car and she had a bad spot of car oil on her head and more in her fur. When she started to clean herself I intervened and mixed flour into the short hair on top of her head. I rubbed in the flour until the hair stopped sticking together in spikes. That took quite a few pinches of flour. The flour absorbed the oil. Then she shook her head and grey flour flew in all directions. I brushed the top of her head and rubbed it with a bit of nubbly terrycloth to get the rest of the flour out. She put up with it pretty well.

Finally she hissed at me and wanted to leave. I wouldn't let her out: I don't want her to sleep under a car again. Instead, I gave her some soft catfood. After inspecting several spots and finding them wanting, she went upstairs and went to sleep.

More swimming

Oannes SwimsI swam again at 10:00 Sunday and at 7:00 today. The coach is very good at giving us just a little more to do each time, which leads to incremental improvement. I feel challenged but not overwhelmed. At the same time I can see continuous progress.

Transit strike is narrowly averted

The Toronto Transit Commission and the city went down to the wire and then some with a 4:00 p.m. deadline. At 6:00 p.m. they announced a tentative deal. Basically, it gives the transit union what they asked for: transit strike is narrowly averted.

The cat came back

Marlowe re-appeared after about 36 hours. She showed up in the back yard with a young rat to toss around. In a few minutes she settled down and ate it.

I brought her in when the phone rang in the house and gave her some food with medicine in it. She wasn't very interested. I let her out again.

In the evening she came back and I gave her a pill, then fed her a big bowl of food with medicine in it. I kept her in for a while, but when she got restless I let her out.

Another 7:00 a.m. swim

Oannes SwimsI got to swimming almost on time after a bit of early morning blogging. I did breaststroke to warm up, then extended flutter kick, and finally some front crawl. I'm still learning to concentrate on my breathing, turn my head properly, and keep going more than a length or two. I'll be swimming with Oannes Swims again on Sunday morning.

On the way home I picked up and dropped off dry cleaning.

This afternoon I got some HTML work.

Dinner out

An old and good friend is in town with a colleague. So they met us at The Auld Spot on Danforth and we had a nice meal and talk. Eventually my brother showed up as well. Everyone seems to have a lot of interesting experiences to share.

The Auld Spot is named after a pig or a breed of pigs. The front of the pub looked like this last summer but there's a new, roll-up front now.

In memoriam

My friend called. Her friend's husband just died of complications after an operation a couple of weeks ago for lung cancer. He seemed to be an awfully nice fellow. His wife has finally quit smoking, about the time of the operation. But maybe she'll start again now.

Biking aches?

Oannes Swims logoI had my first bike ride, first ride on new bike, and first long bike ride yesterday of the season. Then in the evening one of my feet hurt a lot. I was afraid that it was something about the bike or the biking; but then I remembered I twisted my foot yesterday: it's a simple bruise. So I don't have to worry about the geometry of the bike.

This morning I went swimming and had a good hour of practice with Oannes swims.

Pigs escape from highway crash

From Toronto Star:

The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 through Mississauga are expected to remain clogged throughout the afternoon following a crash involving a tractor trailer hauling pigs, the second recent accident involving livestock on a GTA road.

Monday morning's crash occurred near Winston Churchill Blvd. Ontario Provincial Police originally shut down all eastbound and westbound lanes, but then re-opened the westbound ones.

"About 8 a.m. this morning, Highway 401 eastbound was slowing down as it usually does in morning rush hour," OPP Sgt. Cam Woolley told CTV.ca Toronto.

"A tractor-trailer travelling eastbound, hauling livestock, for some reason failed to slow down and slammed into slower traffic, virtually crushing a full-sized pickup and ramming a car and a large van.

"The tractor-trailer then hurtled over to the left lane and rolled onto its right side, with the cab bursting into flames," he said.

"The driver escaped -- along with about 50 to 60 pigs."

The pickup truck driver suffered very serious injuries. The car driver was also injured, and the van and tractor trailer driver suffered minor injuries. All four were taken to hospital, Woolley said....

...most of pigs have been corralled now. A livestock truck has been commandeered to haul them away.

Pilates for two: new session

Last night we started another set of Pilates lessons. The class is moving into more subtle and controlled movements. We spent most of the lesson becoming aware of our pectoral girdles: how our shoulder-blades moved, moving our arms by moving our shoulder blades and vice versa, and freeing up our shoulder blades to glide freely.
